Waking Torture

It was twilight
I ran faster than I do in the light
Through the encroaching darkness
Adrenaline pumped my limbs
It wasn't a runner's high
The fear coated me

Then the nightmare changed
You were there
We were standing on the side of the road with luggage
Looking for our car
Then you left me behind
Near the mouth of a black tunnel
I could feel the encroaching evil
The fear coated me

I started looking for you
Our luggage heavily trailing behind me
I came up to a dusty red car
You were inside
With her
As I came up to the window
You pulled away from each other
The fear coated you

I wanted to break the window
I wanted to scream
I wanted to fall to my knees
I wanted to die
The betrayal coated me

I tore myself awake
A moan shook me
Weeping followed
The worst pain -
You put me in danger
Sacrificing me to the night
For her
The anguish coats me.
